The project would provide annual irrigation to 29,412 ha. in Balaghat district of M.P. through Left Bank Canal and 27,708 ha. in Bhandara district of Maharashtra through Right Bank Canal totalling to 57,120 ha.
As per the interstate agreement between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the construction of Dam and Left Bank Canal is to be carried out by Madhya Pradesh and that of Right Bank Canal is to be carried out by Maharashtra. While the cost of the dam is to be shared equally by the two states, the cost of L.B.C. and R.B.C. have to be borne by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively.
The project was approved by the Planning Commission on 16.12.1999 for an estimated cost of Rs. 161.57 crore (at C.S.R.1988-89) .
A brief description of main components of the project, as being executed, is given below :
a)Dam (To be executed by Govt. of M.P)
Earth Dam is 6420 m long with maximum height of 31 m, including 220 m long ogee type spillway. The spillway is provided with 6 nos. crest gates of size 15m x 12m each to pass a peak design flood of 12616 cumec.
b)Left Bank Canal To be executed by Govt. of M.P)
Left Bank Canal offtaking from left flank of main dam is 80.52 km long(unlined) with a head discharge capacity of 22.275 cumec and will cater to an irrigable area of 29412 ha annually in Balaghat district of M.P.
c)Right Bank Canal To be executed by Govt. of Maharashtra)
Right Bank Canal offtaking from right flank of main dam is 26.61km long (unlined) with a discharge capacity of 25.65 cumec and will cater to an irrigable area of 27708 ha annually in Bhandara district of Maharashtra.
d)Branch Canals
The tail end of LBC caters to existing Waraseoni Branch Canal (Remodelling) having head discharge of 12.672 cumec. Two branch canals i.e. branch canal 1 and branch canal 2 are offtaking from tail end of RBC having head discharge of 14.201 cumec and 4.586 cumec respectively.
e)Distributaries And Minors
There are 21 distributaries offtaking from Left Bank Canal and 9 from Right Bank Canal. One minor namely Chikhali minor also offtakes from Right Bank Canal.
Present Status
The actual construction work of the project was started in 1979-80 but was stopped in 1983-84 due to enforcement of Forest Conservation Act, 1980. In April 1989 on getting clearance from forest angle, the work was restarted. The project was brought under AIBP and so far the dam is completed during the year 2012 and upto March 2011 no irrigation potential is created in both the states.
