ATMA NIRBHAR,

ATMA NIRBHAR,
I had written about being atma nirbhar even in our homes during this period when pendamic seems to have reached community spread phase.
I am doing my utmost to be atma nirbhar.
Spent all my adult life in 'fauj'. Loved it. So it was easy :-)

For those who did NOT get it. See below :-)

Morningwalk Vignettes - Practise makes perfect.

Morningwalk Vignettes - Practise makes perfect.
This refers to before BC (before corona) era
My morning walk continues even when I go to Ajeet-Jayati's place in Delhi.
Timing of my morning and news paper boys going about there coincide. The route was full of mostly 4 storied buildings standing cheek by jowl.
Those boys did their homework before starting on their distribution rounds. News papers were rolled up and secured with a rubber band so that pages do not fly off when the paper is thrown. Papers were properly arranged in the basket hanging in front. These boys came to stop picked a paper and with extreme confidence threw it. The throws landen in the balcony.  Invariably first paper to be thrown was on 4th floor, followed by 3rd, 2nd, 1st and lastly a throw in ground floor of the house.
Almost all the boys were expert at such throws.  To the best of my recollection they seldom missed their throw. Proving age old adage - Practise makes perfect.
After a bit of mathematics about the size of basketball court and average height of 4th floor balcony, A thought came to my mind.
What if we train selected boys to play basket ball. With the expertise gained with newspapers it wont take them long to get a basket with every throw. :-)
May be they could make olympic winning team !!!!!!!

Well done Forest Department, Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Well done Forest Department, Nagpur, Maharashtra.
Due to pandemic other than our 40 minutes walk in the morning, remaining 23 hours and 20 minutes of  the day are spent confined within the four walls of home.
Those 40 minutes of walk in the fresh air invigorates and charges our batteries which lets us run efficiently in getting through remaining 23 hours 20 minute.
When we returned from Delhi after two and half months our car wont start, leave alone start it wont even crank. Battery was dead as a dodo. Shelled out cash and replaced the battery.
For the welfare of the battery and car we had to do something equivalent to our 40 minutes morning walk.
We take out the car. Go out drive around 8-10 kms with windows closed. Come back and park the car for next 10 days. Car stays healthy and we have some happy moments.
Latest outing was on 19 Sept 20. Went up to DSOI near Vayusena Nagar. On the way back saw few cars parked, where logically, they had no reason to be parked.  Slowed down and saw this  board

Addition of brand new Biodiversity Park.
A gift to Birders and nature lovers of Nagpur.

After Biodiversity Park on wadi road and Little Wood on Hingna Road, this is the third Biodiversity park in Nagpur. We should be proud.
Even though it was new for us those who had parked the cars seemed to know about it. Got down and made enquiries.
This is what we were told by the forest guard on gate duty.
Forest Department was working on it since June 20. It was formally opened in August 20. Timings are from 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM. On all days except on Monday which is weekly closed. Entry fee is Rs 10/-. Single track available now is about 2 KMs.(one way). Photo is likely to give an idea of what that track is likely to be

Presently this is the only track and its condition..

This Biodiversity park is not marked on google map as yet. I have now added it, it will appear in due course after approval of google map team. Screen shot f location given below.

Red marker- Latest Biodiversity Park.

In these grim times, birders and Nature lovers of Nagpur and may be other places as well would like to Thank and Say
WELL DONE FOREST DEPARTMENT, NAGPUR.

 PS.
We did not go inside this time. May be on next car outing after 10 days or so........

Morning Walk Vignettes - What are your plans for today.

Morning Walk Vignettes - What are your plans for today.
Due to our morning walk, we are the first to go out of the building. I Have kept a rejected vest, which I was using to clean the car on the grill of iron gate.(photo)

I use this as a glove to undo latches and open / close the gate. This way I avoid skin contact with surfaces touched by many people. In these times, one can never be too careful.
This morning as I was reaching out for the vest, I noticed an insect near it.
Closer look left me totally amazed. What I saw was a very very small, 4- 5 mm  Long and 3-4 mm tall., live and fully working miniature model of a Praying Mantis. It was almost translucent white.
What I Thought was an insect.

Front view
Marvel of nature. A Living working miniature model - Praying Mantis.

Best shot before it vanished.

Other than why they are called Praying Mantis ( a closer look at its folded hands tells us why) I do not know anything about Praying Mantis. I do not know if this is an altogether pigmy breed. Or is it a baby mantis. Do the Mantis give birth to babies or babies are hatched from eggs.
My ignorance is colossal,
Today I plan to do google search and get on to wikipedia to learn something about Praying Mantis.
So, What are your plans for today.
:-)

Morning Walk Vignettes - Public works in "Andher Nagri".

Morning Walk Vignettes -  Public works in "Andher Nagri".
Lot of infrastructure work if being done in Nagpur for the last few years. Aim being to make Nagpur a smart city.
During my morning walk I see the work which is going on and which to all intent and purposes having been completed. Sights of lots of completed work makes me sad at the waste of public money, way slipshod work as passed all inspections and declared completed.
Such sites reminds me of  a story about  "Andher Nagri which had a choupat Raja". Officials in whose raj were also 'choupat."
Apparently they :
did not use common sense, were not accountable to anyone for any thing, did not believe in work ethics or insist on quality execution of work etc .
A pictures is supposed to be equal to 1000 words. These photos. one of newly constructed footpath on Ambazari-Hingna road, others of various junction boxes of electricity board near jaitala sunday market site and the valve opening HOLE can be seen anywhere.
Will concerned authorities take remedial actions?
With this type of work execution Nagpur, rather than becoming Smart City will be doomed to remain andher nagari.
Footh path or obstacle course?

Morning Walk Vignettes - Mystery of the bottles with red liquid.

Morning Walk Vignettes -  Mystery of the  bottles with red liquid.
Long back, during my morning walk I was intrigued to see one odd bottle filled with red liquid hanging near the gate of almost every other house. I had no clue why they had taken all the trouble to prepare red liquid, fill it in a bottle and hang it couple of feet above the ground.
I am a curious character by nature and like to know answers to my doubts. Not being a cat I am still around asking questions and satisfying my curiosity.
Found the answer. Then forgot all about it.
For the last three four days one fast food fellow has parked his minivan at a place along my  route. I have not seen "Babumoshai" open selling, chinese, chicken biryani etc so early in the day.
This morning saw new addition to his minivan. Three very fresh bottles filled with red liquid. Two hanging on small trees on either side of the van and the third hanging behind the front
Tyre.

Two bottles on trees either side. One behind front tyre.
RT click & open the photo in new tab to see all 3 bottles.

Sight of these bottles after almost a year brought memories flooding back and I had become curious and found the answer.
It seems dogs do not like to poop around these bottles. The bottle hanging near the gate keeps the surroundings free of dog poop. Red liquid is, simply à¤•ुंकू (vermilion) added to plain water.
Proprietor of Babumoshai seems ti believe in red bottles.
If you people are having trouble with dog poop, try it out.
Have I tried it?
With me around no dog has ever pooped near our house !!

COVID -19 and Atma Nirbhar.

COVID -19 and Atma Nirbhar.
PM has given a call for everyone to make India Atma Nirbhar.
I would like to say that with increase of 97,500 plus covid cases every day we are now in stage three of the coronavirus pandemic. Advisory issued by concerned authorities to remain safe means  almost total isolation.
To remain in almost total isolation and remain safe is possible only if you and your family is Atma Nirbhar.
Let me elucidate.
All our married life we have had maids to do all the household chores like, Jhadu, pocha, utensils dusting and any thing else that needed doing. A gardner to look after the garden. A man to do odd jobs.
After retirement moved in a small first floor flat. No gardner, no odd job man. We still had a maid servant, Tulsa Bai, now working for us for the last 25 years, so almost a family member now. She did Jhadu, pocha, cleaned utensils and made chapatis for the two of us.
We had gone to Delhi for 15 -20 day stay in March. Got stuck due to lock down returned after almost three months in last week of May.
Thoroughly brainwashed that Tulsa Bai was not to continue in doing household Chores.
With my background I was always used to household chores.Priti was doing household chores before marriage. A housewife thereafter. Doing equal amount of work as Tulsabai went about her job.
As a result of Ajeet's urging that even though It is now more than three months since our return. Tulsa Bai has not crossed our threshold.
Priti and I are doing all that need doing.
We are Atma Nirbhar and hopefully safe to that extent.
In these hard times Priti makes sure that Tulsa Bai gets her full pay packed on the 1st for bringing us vegetables once a week,
My sincere request to all to start doing all your own household chores yourselves. Initially you may find it difficult. You will be surprised how fast one adopts to changed circumstances.
Do every household chore yourself.  But do pay the maids, remember times are hard for them as well.

TO STAY SAFER, EVER BECOME ATMA NIRBHAR.

Morning Walk Vignettes : Pandemic - Life must go on.

Morning Walk Vignettes : Pandemic - Life must go on.
I have been going for my morning walk for more than 20 odd years now.
Along my morning walk route, there are lot of early morning breakfast thelas, stalls located at strategic places plying their trade for 2-3 hours in the morning.
As long as I remember there has always been a  nasta & tea stall and other etables manned by  Mr and Mrs, Yadav near Hingna T point. Another place which has been there is a Tea and, "Nasta", savji poha and chana, eatables 'thela' at the cornet of Mangalmurti chowk. Photo below.
First write up on:
Saoji Poha :
He usually came at his usual spot near Mangalmurti chowk, around 0545 to 0600 hour . Did fair amount of business and wound up at around 0800. We had common milk vendor. Few times our milk collection times coincided. He usually differed to me and indicated that I should be served first. I always declined and told him to collect his milk first as he had to start his sales as early as possible. He acknowledged it by folding his hands and a smile.
Every time I passed his thela, if not busy in serving customers, he used to wave at me. I responded by a loud 'namaskar' and a smile.
We never exchanged words. I Never had tea or poha with chana at his thela. Except twice we got it packed when Anuj wanted to eat saoji poha and chana. Anuj loves street food In fact he loves "food".....
.
We went to Delhi in first week of March. Got stuck there due to C-19. Eventually returned by May end.Started our morning walk some time towards June end. initially because of compulsory home quarantine and later as precautionary measure.

Did not see either the tea thela or Yadavs at tea stall since we started our walks almost two months plus.
I checked. I was told that, almost all the thelewala had to either stay at home or do something to earn daily bread. With thela as an asset, they switched over to selling fresh vegetables as thelas selling essential items like vegetables were exempt from lockdown restrictions.

Our established roadside or regular thelewala vegetable trader may not have done business management course. Yet by experience they knew inventory control, and inventory management. They Follow first in last out or last in first out principles, how to, how much and when to order and other management tricks. Also following tricks not taught in management courses but learnt with experience. How to preserve the perishable stuff for as long as possible. Slipping in one odd doubtful piece along with good stuff etc. In the end they did manage to turn sufficient profits to sustain themselves.
Men like my  tea stall fellow had no idea of the tricks of the trade. They had terrible times. Many could not sustain. How they managed to survive will remain something between them and their God.
For the last 5-6 days, after the latest relaxations in lockdown conditions, I was glad to see my  the tea thela fellow was in his usual spot near Mangalmurti chowk, trying to restart the business he was used to & engaged in for all these years. See photo.

Today for the first had conversation with him. Mainly me talking. Asking questions and he replying in monosyllables.
He had tried his hand at selling vegetables but was reluctant to share any type of details. I did not persist. At the moment not many customers were coming to him.
I asked him if customers do not pick up what he will do. He shrugged and replied
साहेब करोना असो  कींवा  नसो जीवन तर à¤œà¤—ायचंय
SIR, PANDEMIC OR NO PANDEMIC LIFE MUST GO ON.
Before parting asked him if I could take his photo and write about him.
Again he shrugged and said
तुम्हाला काढायचे असेल तर  काढा
Here meet my tea stall fellow.

My heart goes out to people like him. Hope and pray that corona goes away and for everyone, life returns to normal.

Morning Walk Vignettes - Tree Pruning.

Morning Walk Vignettes - Tree Pruning.
This is about Nagpur and any other place with similar problem.
Some time back I had praised good work done by the concerned authorities, MNC / PWD / CPWD ( not sure exactly which agency was responsible.) of pruning the overgrown bougainvillea plants on road divider, near Hingna T point and along Hingna Ambazari Road.

About 5-7 years back trees were planted on both sides of the road. Fortunately lots of them have survived. These are now grown quite a bit. They offer shade, perch for the birds, add greenery to the city, are good for the environment and quite soothing to the eyes..
Problem is low height of branches of these tress  encroach up to a width of 10 feet or more effectively reducing road width by that much. Thus big portion of the road totally unusable by any vehicle or even by pedestrians.See photo.

Low branches encroaching the road.

Some branches are as low as a foot or even lower.

Adverse effects of reduced road width need not be spelt out.
Request to MNC / PWD /concerned authority.
Periodically, when pruning of plants on road divider is being carried out,  trees on either side of the road may also be pruned. This will effectivet make the full width of the road usable.
Hoping for positive response.

COVID-19 Pandemic- The Life must go on.

COVID-19 Pandemic- The Life must go on.
At national level for the last few days we have hit world record on daily increase and deaths due to pandemic with daily active cases crossing 90,000 and 1115 Deaths.
Economic activity is picking up with gradual opening of lockdown restrictions which permit economic activity by big time manufacturers, SMEs big and small businesses.
Despite this GDP last quarter shrinking by 23.9%.
In this situation Govt is on horns of dilemma. It is caught between deep sea and the Devil. Facing a catch 22 situation.
My heart goes out to PM Narendra Modi and the Govt led by him. No matter what action he takes opposition parties will be strident in their condemnation. While at the same time in privately, in some corner of their collective conscious or subconscious they must be thanking their stars that it is not they who are in the driver's sear. Not in the govt under such testing times.
I personally feel that further opening up of the restrictions, opening up of metros, starting of schools, Opening of malls, restaurants etc with some basic precautions is a step in the right right direction.
By the end of the day one can only say "que sera sera"
The life must go on.

Morning Walk Vignettes : Cycling.

For some time now I have noticed that health conscious citizens, young and not so young increasingly using cycles as means of exercise and way to achieve fitness.
For the last six months, particularly since the relaxation in lockdown conditions, there has been a spurt in number of cyclists on my morning walk route.
Variety in cycle designs from the frame, mudguards, to handlebars, to shape and size of tyres is astounding. Most of the tyres were normal to slim to slimmer in thickness and size. In the recent past have noticed very few cycles with monstrous size tyres in thickness and size. For those who can recollect Luna scooterette, these appeared slightly bigger than luna tyres.
I was a bit intrigued.
This morning caught, what appeared to me like father son cyclist duo taking a break. It so happened that the father (my assumption) had cycle with such tyres, see photo. On enquiry I was told that as these tyres offer more grip and offer more drag, they give better workout as compared to slim tyres and burn more calories. To my next question I was told that he had purchased it 5 years back, Cost at that time was Rs 25,000/-
My jaw nearly dropped !
I went all the way back more than 60 to 65 years.
There was no variety in cycles. Only cycle available was Hercules, Made in England.
Term market share was not born then. Hercules had 100% market share. I think it cost Rs 100/-. My father was a teacher in govt school. I did not how much was his pay. Those days children did not know such things.  Many years later I came to know his pay in those days of Rs 100/- Hercules. was RS 375/-
In all of our locality there was only one cycle. Competition came many years later when Atlas bicycle of Indian origin was introduced in India.
Down south in Sangli, my maternal grandparents place my maternal uncle had a Hercules. He had to pay municipal tax on it. He had to secure a metal tablet (called Billa in marathi) as proof that he had paid the tax and 'registered' his cycle. Considering high speed of this vehicle the municipal authorities insisted that after sunset there should be a light mounted on the cycle. He had a special dynamo with headlight and a rear red light also mounted on his cycle. I could not ride it but had great  time  with cycle on stand, hand paddling with dynamo engaged and  just to see the bright headlight. Finally I had to be pulled away.......
Indeed since those day when owning a Hercules was a status symbol our country has come a long way.
There are times when I am almost proud of the progress we have made!

COVID -19 Pendamic.

 COVID -19 Pandemic.

Covid 19 has dominated and overwhelmed our thinking and actions for more than eight months. So much so that now most of my blogs are around this pandemic. Our son staying in Delhi really is worried about us. Specially now that there is sudden spurt in active cases and Nagpur is reporting as many new cases as Delhi. This is really worrisome. In his daily morning calls he is constantly  urging, coaxing and even scolding us to be very verv careful.

During our morning walk, Yes we do go for morning walk as it is considered essential and necessary.

About 40 mts out 24 hours per day, in open air, away from the confines of home are considered a must for mental well being. Of course please take all the precautions when out on the walk.

Despite clear and constant bombardment of advisories and precautionary measures on social media and govt messages before every telephone call, large number of people are roaming around without masks and not observing social distancing.
.
So during our morning walk whosoever I see without mask I tell them that for their own good they should use mask. Some teenagers told me to mind my own business. Most just ignore.
I am a stubborn fellow and keep on telling every unmasked fellow to mend his ways.
I was most happy when I saw a couple, whom I had seen without mask for few days using mask. The gentleman was real gentleman and a good sport. When we crossed he gave me such a wide smile, that I could see despite the mask he was wearing while pointing to his mask. Made my day.
I request all those wise and sensible citizens to please tell every person they see not using the mask to do so.
If as a result of their urging even if ONE person starts using the mask. It can be considered as a good deed for the day.

Dams In Vidarbha Region EDIT-WHY- NOW.

Dams in Vidarbha Region. Edit- Why - Now.

How blogs about dams in Vidarbha Region came about.

Our group wanted to go on a picnic to to a lake. I took up the responsibility to locate a suitable place. When I took up that responsibility I did not realise where it would finally lead.
Checked on Google maps.Lakes, Reservoirs etc which are shown in blue. Satellite view showed surrounding areas. I noticed that almost none of the water bodies were named. So even if you could locate it you could not name it.
Decided to find the names, then some details about the lakes. I became very involved in searching the names and details about the lakes around Nagpur. During my efforts I came across Water Resources Information System (WRIS) web site. It led me to Bhuvan web sites.
(unfortunately these web sites are now not accessible with earlier links) Between these two sources they had any and every thing about Water resources of India. Wikipedia was there with the list of Major Dams in India  and list of Major Dams in Maharashtra. With these web sites wanted information though readily available compiling  it was was laborious and very time consuming process. My lack of experience in using the computer and the internet further complicated the matters. As I progressed new ideas came which were incorporated in all those blogs which were already done.
It took me more than a year to complete 33 posts/ blogs containing information about 380 Dams and Reservoirs of  all the 11 districts of Vidarbha Region
Finally these 33 blogs were published between January 2013 to August 2013.

Disaster.
Some time during intervening years disaster struck. All my maps and their screen shots, not only of the these 380 dams but also of all blogs on road journeys in India and few to foreign countries from  "Our Travels" went missing. They were lost in cyber space. In place of the link to map and screen shots blog was left with an ugly icon which, when opened, proclaimed 404 error. Map can not be found.
Unfortunately  all the text information of the trip  which was included in the maps itself of "Our Travel" blogs was lost. I have been trying to recreate map of these trips. It is proving to be very difficult task as I have to depend on my fading memory and the data available in the car diaries. Work is going on on those maps for last three years plus and is still far from complete.

Dams in Vidarbha Region. Edit- Why - Now.
Though map links and screen shot of dam maps was lost. Luckily the information on the dams was not lost. Even though any time I opened one of the dam blog the ugly missing map icon used to hit as an eye sore. But As i was busy with recreating " Our Travel" maps I did not pay attention to missing maps of Dam blogs.
On 2 Aug 20 I had mail intimating me that

Irfan Israil sheikh has left a new comment on your post "DAMS IN WARDHA DISTRICT - PART ONE .":
Hello sir my name is Irfan sheikh I am a Ph.D. student. doing research on Bor reservoir if you Have any information related to Bor Dharan kindly contact me on my no. 9730949115

I rang up Mr Sheikh and told him that required information was available on Part Two of Dams in Wardha Dist.
Even though for all these years only one person had some use of my blog, I felt that if ever any one else want to refer to my Dam blogs, he should have proper link to the map and a see a nice screen shot of map with the view of the dam.
Edits of all the 33 blogs and 380 dams have been carried out between 02 August 2020 to end September 2020.
Not only the missing map screen shots and map links have been added, text has also been edited where considered necessary.
Information about dams which was not available earlier has been added.
